How to Prepare a Passport or Visa Photo That Passes

A passport or visa photo has to match an exact standard, not just look nice. This guide shows how to check a photo against those rules and crop it correctly before you print or upload — without sending your face to any website. It's useful for travelers, and for the immigration consultants and travel agents who prepare photos for clients every day.

Take a usable starting photo

Stand in front of a plain, light wall with even light on your face. Face the camera straight, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, and make sure both eyes are open and visible. A phone camera is fine — the tool handles the exact sizing later.

Open the validator

Go to the Passport & Visa Photo Validator. It runs in your browser, so the photo stays on your device. Drop your image onto the page to load it.

Pick the standard and review the checks

Choose your target — US Visa (DS-160) or Schengen / ICAO 9303. The tool finds your head and checks the geometry, pose, background and lighting against that standard. Read each result. If a check fails, it tells you what's wrong — head too small, background uneven, light not balanced.

Fix and re-check

Adjust what the tool flagged: move closer or back for head size, change your background, or fix the lighting. Re-run the check until every item passes.

Crop and export

Let the tool auto-crop the photo to the correct size and resolution — 600×600 at 300 DPI for US, or the Schengen size at 600 DPI — and export a print-ready JPEG.

Print at a photo shop or upload to the portal right away. If weeks pass, re-check before you submit, in case the rules changed.
